ABSTRACT
Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetically inherited disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration of photoreceptors and a subsequent decline in visual function. Although various treatments, such as neuroprotective drugs, gene repair or gene therapy, and transplantation of stem cells and their derivatives, have been explored, an effective cure for RP remains elusive. The rd10 mouse, which harbors a missense mutation in exon 13 of the PDE6B gene, displays retinal abnormalities closely mirroring those observed in human RP. These include diminished optomotor responses, reduced amplitudes in scotopic electroretinograms, and decreased outer nuclear layer thickness, as verified by immunocytochemistry and optical coherence tomography. Due to its slow disease progression, the rd10 mouse serves as an exemplary model for investigating the pathophysiology of RP and exploring potential vision restoration strategies. This article reviews the latest research on the structural and functional aspects of the rd10 mouse retina and discusses its prospective applications in RP research and treatment.
