Learning is a complex process that is accomplished through the interaction of multiple senses, in which vision plays an important role.Abnormalities of vision problems probably having an adverse effect on learning are referred to as learning-related vision problems. In 2008, the American Optometric Association (AOA) approved and revised the Optometric Clinical Practice Guideline Care of the Patient with Learning Related Vision Problems, which provides appropriate evaluation methods, diagnosis and treatment strategies for patients with learning related vision problems to reduce the risk of visual problems interfering with learning process. This guideline provides a comprehensive description of the definition, epidemiology, evaluation and clinical diagnosis and treatment of learning related vision problems. In foreign countvies, optometrists are the main members who provide assistance to patients with learning problems. They form a multidisciplinary comprehensive managing team with health care practitioners and special education professionals. The optometrists are mainly responsible for handling visual factors that affect learning. However, many domestic optometrists are still not familiar with learning related vision problems, and they do not yet understand clinical practice guidelines well.Although the guideline was revised in 2008, it is still in use. Therefore, the interpretation of the guideline has certain reference significance in the study of children’s visual science in China. The main content of the Optometric Clinical Practice Guideline Care of the Patient with Learning Related Vision Problems was introduced and elucidated to get a deeper understanding of learning related vision problems and improve the diagnosis and treatment skills of optometrists, so as to better serve patients.
