Survivin is a member of inhibitors of apoptosis protein family, compared with other members, survivin has a unique baculovirus apoptosis inhibitory protein—inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP) baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) and alpha helix molecular structure, determines its important role in the inhibition of cell apoptosis and control in the cell cycle, and is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation and angiogenesis process, and it is closely related to the cell cycle of the IAP family members. In addition, the distribution of survivin in tissues is highly selective. It is highly expressed in malignant tumors and is not expressed in normal adult tissues. Therefore, it is regarded as an important prognostic indicator of malignant tumors. In this paper, the molecular structure, tissue distribution and main functions of survivin gene are reviewed, and the research progress of its relation with ophthalmic diseases, including ocular tumor, ocular surface disease, ocular related immune diseases, lens disease and retinopathy are emphatically expounded.
