Carotid artery stenosis (CAS) refers to stenosis or occlusion of the common carotid artery and internal carotid artery. It can cause a variety of ischemic eye diseases. In the acute phase, it often manifests as transient amaurosis and central retinal artery occlusion. In the chronic phase, it often manifests as retinal vein occlusion, venous stasis retinopathy, ocular ischemic syndrome and ischemic optic neuropathy. Color Doppler flow imaging, fundus fluorescein angiography, optical coherence tomography, optical coherence tomography angiography, and electroretinogram can be used to detect changes in ocular structure and blood flow caused by CAS. Carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting are common methods for the treatment of severe internal carotid artery stenosis. Many studies have shown that carotid artery surgery can not only increase the ocular blood supply but also improve or even cure eye diseases caused by CAS. This article reviews the clinical research progress of CAS-related eye diseases, examination methods and treatment, in order to identify CAS patients with eye lesions as soon as possible, and carry out accurate etiological treatment, so as to improve the prognosis of patients.
